Although the spotting gene responsible for the typical Appaloosa pattern is considered dominant, a horse that carries it might not display the recognizable coat pattern, mottled skin and other characteristics of the breed required for regular registration with the Appaloosa Horse Club. However, it could still be registered with the club as a "non-characteristic" Appaloosa on the basis of its pedigree. If so registered, it is also possible for a dappled liver chestnut Appaloosa (or any other solid Appaloosa) to receive a performance permit from the club, pending the verification of its parentage through DNA analysis. This allows it to compete in ApHC-approved events.
